How much do you allow for hang width when buying fabric for curtains?

I am buying some material for curtains for my kitchen. I do not have a pattern but I thought I would just make some straight seams and use them on a straight rod.

Not too difficult.

I am wondering how much extra fabric you should allow for a good width hang for the curtains. For example, how wide of fabric should I allow for a 36" wide window?
