How do you shoose the width of your bit?

I am looking for a new three piece snaffle for my barrel horse. I find he did better when I borrowed a friend's bridle that had a three piece instead of the regular broken snaffle. He doesn't gap his mouth I suppose because it doesn't pinch his tongue as much.

How do you measure for the right bit width?
